CANDU can and does

The success of the CANDU pressurized heavy-water (PHW) power reactor at Pickering is emphasized. Not only are four 750 MW power reactors being built at Bruce, Ontario, but all future reactors built in Canada in the forseeable future will be of the PHW type. The first two 540 MW units at Pickering were financed jointly by Ontario Hydro and by loan; from the Ontario and Federal Governments. Pickering 3 and 4, and Bruce Nuclear Power Station are being financed solely by Ontario Hydro. The calandrias at Pickering are made of stainless steel, 26 1/2 ft. in diameter and 27 ft. long, each containing 390 horizontal fuel channels surrounded by heavy water. Each channel holds 12 fuel bundles with sintered uranium oxide fuel pellets. The heavy water leaves the reactor at 560 deg F and 1280 psi, then circulates through tube-in-shell heat exchangers. Fuel is changed at power by coordinated refuelling machines at the ends of the reactor. On the average, nine bundles are changed daily in each reactor. Spent fuel is stored under 26 ft. of water.
