Safety factors in nuclear policy

The demand for electricity is rising quickly and it is estimated that Britain will possibly need to build up to two nuclear power stations a year for the next six years. Arguments raging as to the type of reactor that should be built. There are five AGR stations being built at the moment but Britain will have no reliable operating experience of them for another three or four years. Thus the CEGB, if it wants more nuclear power stations, must look elsewhere for a proven system. The two systems that fill the bill are the light water cooled reactors (LWR) developed in the United States, and the Magnox, gas cooled reactors developed in the UK. Advantages and disadvantages in the choice of each are ,discussed. (UK)
