Beta-irradiation apparatus

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4378151
5pDisadvantages of conventional BETA -irradiation units are discussed, including the lack of provision for varying the intensity and geometry of the radiation field and the fact that in charging and recharging the unit the total activity of the irradiator must be dealt with, making necessary the use of expensive hot chambers'' and remote-operated manipulators. In the apparatus described the irradiator is divided into at least two compartmerts, each of which has a source holder to accommodate a number of hermetic capsules containing the BETA -emitter. The activity of the BETA -emitter in each capsule and the number and relative arrangement of the capsules within each holder, and the number and relative arrangement of holders within each compartment, being variable, radiation fields of predetermined intensity and geometry may be obtained. The demountable construction of the irradiator simplifies charging and recharging. (UK)
