Radiological and Environmental Research Division annual report, July 1972 - June 1973. Estimates of the male and female gonadal dose produced by x ray examination of the skeleton of radiuma cases are presented. The estimates are based on exposure data for four radium cases and are expressed as dose due to projections, which always include the gonads in the useful beam (the minimum dose) and possible additional dose due to projections which may or may not include the gonads in the useful beam. For men the minimum dose was in the range of 30 to 72 mrad, and the possible additional dose in the range of 83 to 150 mrad. For women the minimum dose was in the range of 46 to 390 mrad, and the possible additional dose in the range 73 to 220 mrad. The range of minimum doses for women shows the effect of contributions from a lumbar spot projection, which was deleted from the x-ray examination at the beginning of April, 1973. When the contribution from the lumbar spot is ignored, the range of minimum ovary doses becomes 46 to 87 mrad. Gonadal shields caused a substantial reduction of gonadal dose. (CH)
