Bone marrow dose from x-ray examination of the skeleton

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4371688
A complete skeletal x ray examination was made of each radium patient. Estimates of the dose absorbed by the active marrow were made for four radium cases, and the values range from 56 to 180 mrad. The errors in the estimation procedure tend to cause overestimation at the upper end of the range and underestimation at the lower end of the range. Thus, the true dose values for these cases probably lie in a smaller range than the range of estimates quoted above. A typical dose delivered by the x ray examination during April 1973 was 80 mrad. The estimation procedure, the error of estimation, the effect of leakage through the collimator walls and x ray tube housing, the effect of repetition of exposures during a single examination, and the effect of changes in the projections included in the x ray examination are discussed.
