Metabolic balances of $sup 210$Pb and $sup 210$Po at natural levels
Radiological and Environmental Research Division annual report, July 1972-June 1973. The metabolic balances of /sup 210/Pb and /sup 210/Po were measured in each of 12 men maintained on a metabolic ward. These nuclides were determined in urine and feces collected for one month or more from each subject, and in representative diets, drinking water, and atmospheric levels in the ward. The mean levels ( plus or minus S.E.) were for /sup 210/Pb and /sup 210/Po, respectively, in diets over a period of five months (1.25 plus or minus 0.04) and (1.63 plus or minus 0.05) pCi/day, in urine (0.275 plus or minus 0,026) and (0.269 plus or minus 0.033) pCi/day, and in feces (l.333 plus or minus 0.062) and (1.89 plus or minus 0.10) pCi/day. The mean overall balances (the difference between diet and excreta) of (-0.235 plus or minus 0.075) pCi /sup 210/Pb/day and (-0.337 plus or minus 0.100) pCi /sup 210/Po/day show that over the collection period, larger amounts were excreted than taken in the diet. Atmospheric intake accounts for an additional /sup 210/Pb intake of 0.07 pCi/day, but it contributes a /sup 210/Po intake of only about 0.02 pCi/day (assuming a breathing rate of these subjects of 15 m/sup 3//day). The contribution of cigarette smoke and dietary levels of calcium to the balances is discussed. (auth)
