Cold neutrals and charge exchange in toroidal plasmas

Book ·
OSTI ID:4375127
From third international symposium on toroidal plasma confinement; Garching, Germany (26 Mar 1973). Using a simple stationary model, the importance of charge-exchange losses is discussed for both permeable and impermeable plasmas. The relation between these losses (and, consequently, the neutral density in the plasma) and the charged-particle confinement is displayed. In the regime of volume losses, it is expected that the neutral population in the plasma interior is domirated by particles having a certain energy such that their mean free path is somewhat smaller. In the diffusive regime, the average energy of neutrals and ions is equal. Hence, one has to consider only hot'' neutrals. (GF)
