Recycling and magnetic field ripple influences on the TFR plasma heating by fast neutral injection

From 3rd international symposium on toroidal plasma confinement; Garching, Germany (26 Mar 1973). A three-dimensional recycling model is included in a numerical code. The cold neutral population present in the plasma is calculated self-consistently. An isotropic flux of cold H/sup o/ due to diffusing particles, charge-exchanged particles, and noncaptured beam fraction, all reaching the wall, is ionized at the plasma edge and undergoes dissociation, yielding an H/sup o/ population of mean energy (2 eV). These H/sup o/ are either ionized or charge-exchanged, thus givirig a second generation of hotter neutrals that could go deeper inside the plasma. These phenomena affect the mass and energy balances. Ripple in toroidal field strength (6% at the boundary of T.F.R. plasma) causes nonsymmetric trapping of particles. The resulting drift orbits go to the wall. So diffusion and ion heat conduction are increased above the neoclassical values if the collision frequency is low enough. (GE)
