Internal friction of ferrous martensites
An analysis of data on martensites in Fe--Ni--C, Fe--C, and Fe--Si--C alloys is presented. Results show that two distinct internal friction peaks occur in ferrous martensites which contain carbon. One relaxation peak at approximates 160 deg C at approximates 1 Hz is associated with twin boundary-- carbon interaction; the other is a cold-worktype peak at approximates 250 deg C at approximates 1 Hz, and is associated with dislocation-carbon interaction. Identification of the appropriate mechanisms of these peaks has been accomplished by detailed correlation of the peak characteristics with martensite structure, martensite morphology, and carbon precipitation behavior.
