Observations on deformation-induced $beta$ internal friction peak in the bcc metals

Journal Article · · Scr. Met., v. 8, no. 3, pp. 281-288

Internal friction data are presented on W indicating that the mechanism underlying the BETA relaxation peak does not incorporate the relaxation parameters generally associated with simple dislocation processes. These data are discussed along with similar data on other bcc metals. It is noted that apparent similarities between the BETA peaks and those peaks found near martensitic transformations suggest that the BETA mechanism is the relaxation of twin boundary interfaces, controlled in some manner by the thermallyactivated motion of deformation-induced point defects.
