een the ways in which two energetically close levels are populated during ionization relaxation. Ionization and recombination are interpereted in terms of an electron diffusing in a discrete energy spectrum and it is assumed that there exist channels through which the excited states are populated. Expressions are obtained for the effective probabilities of single-quantum transitions for each channel and also for the fluxes in each channel as functions of n/sub c(t) and T/sub c/(t). The population of the levels in each of the channels is also found under the assumption that the flux is quasistationary over a section of the energy space. (auth)
