Low-intensity ultrasound was used to examine phospholipid biomembrane structural relaxation kinetics including the temperature dependence of the relaxation frequency via velocity dispersion spectroscopy and absorption, and these phenomena are described by thermodynamic and electrical capacitor two-state transition models. Enhanced ultrasound interactions occur near the lipid phase transition temperature. The absorption spectra suggest that the membrane constituents undergo a simple two-state transition. 25 refs., 14 figs., 3 tabs.
