A study of silicon-barrier detector response was made using beams of protons and α -particles which had been backscattered from a high-Z target. A technique for measuring effective window thickness in terms of an equivalent metal electrode is presented. Also presented is a method for determining the relative energy per electron-hole pair for different incident particles in silicon: using this method, it is found that epsilon ( α-particles)/ epsilon (protons) = 0.978 ± 0.006.
