Volumetric determination of U/O ratio in sintered pellets of UO/sub 2+x/ and UO/sub 2+x/.ThO$sub 2$ (in Portuguese)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4365389
A technique for the O/U ratio determination in UO/sub 2+x and UO/sub 2+x/ ThO/sub 2/ sintered pellets is outlined. Tetravalent uranium and total uranium are determined by titration after dissolution with phosphoric acid, with the aid of CO/sub 2 during the titration, avoiding the oxidation of reduced uranium. The difficulties concerning the dissolution of the ceramic-grade oxides are overcome satisfactorily, especially for those oxides containing thorium. The titration of uranium lV in the presence of thorium is run with potassium permanganate, overcoming the difficulties found when the titration is tried with potassium dichromate. The thorium effect during the uranium titration is studied. The O/U ratio is calculated after the determination of total uranium and uranium IV, the content of uranium VI being calculated by difference. (auth)
