Magnetic susceptibilities of dodecaborides of metals with the UB$sub 12$ structure
The magnetic susceptibilities at l00 to 300 deg K of the dodecaborides Yb/sub 12/, ZrB/sub 12/, TbB/sub 12/, DyB/sub 12/, HoB/sub 12/, ErB/sub 12/, TmB/ sub 12/, YbB/sub 12/, and LuB/sub 12/ with the UB/sub 12/ structure were investigated. Dodecaborides of Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb have high magnetic susceptibilities that obey the Curie-Weiss law; this indicates that they possess localized magnetic moments. Their mu /sup eff/ differ from the corresponding values of the metals, owing to removal of f electrons and their involvement in interatomic bonds. The closed character of the f shells or Lu and Yb is violated in their dodecaborides; this is indicated by the very high values of their magnetic susceptibilities, the Curie-Weiss law being obeyed in the case of YB/sub 12/. The dodecaborides Yb/sub 12/ and ZrB/sub 12/ have very low susceptibilities and these depend only weakly on temperature. These compounds evidently do not possess localized magnetic moments. (auth)
