BINARY DODECABORIDES

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
Cubic dodecaborides of Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu, and Y, isomorphous with UB/ sub 12/ and ZrB/sub 12/, were prepared by the reaction of metal sesquioxides with excess amorphous boron at 1400--1500 deg C in a protective helium atmosphere. The boron atoms are linked in a rigid three dimensional network with metal atoms in large cubo-cctahedral holes. The stability of the structure appears to be a sensitive function of the effective size of the metal atom; it could not be prepared when metal atoms larger than Dy or smaller than Zr were used. Coefficients of thermal expansion of HoB/sub 12/ and of ErB/sub 12/ were measured by x-ray-diffraction methods. (auth)
