Relationship of nitrogen content to the susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels to stress corrosion. Final technical report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4364218
The effect of solute nitrogen on stress-corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steels in boiling MgCl/sub 2/ was investigated in three separate ways: (1) determination of the effect of nitrogen on failure times for Type 304 stainless steel wires for various known stresses, (2) study of U-bend cracking behavior of high purity 20Cr--20Ni and commercial Type 310 alloy, and (3) use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of nitrogen on the dislocation structure and cracking behavior of Type 304 U-bend specimens.
