Finite-energy sum rules for the imaginary part of a currenthadron scattering amplitude are related to the general lightcone commutator of the two currents. The conditions for which the usual fixed, or quasi-fixed, mass sum rules are reproduced are examined and general relations are obtained between the deep inelastic structure functions. The possible restrictions on the functions appearing in the light-cone commutator are discussed. The pion-nucleon scattering amplitude is also related to the electromagnetic deep inelastic structure functions for the neutron and the proton, and an estimate is made of the effective mass'' of the current constituents which is found to be small.
