Linear particle accelerator (in Japanese)

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4357860
The microwaves generated from a magnetron are transmitted into an accelerator tube through a variable attenuator and a directional coupler. The attenuator comprises a waveguide and one or more pairs of quartz tubes which are located within the waveguide laterally with respect to waveguide's axis. A fluid such as water or air flows through the quartz tube and a heat exchanger to act as an absorber for microwaves, and the absorption coefficiency for microwaves varies with its temperature. A detecting means which is provided in the directional coupler measures the transmitting microwave power. The detected signals representing the power are fed to a comparative amplifier where they are compared with a predetermined level. Error signals are generated from the comparator to control the opening ratio of electromagnetic valves which determines the flow rate of coolant which is passed through the heat exchanger. Thus the suitable temperature of the fluid as an absorber is regulated, whereby the desired microwave power transmitted into the accelerator may be obtained over a lower range as well as over a higher range.
