The range R, in Makrofol and cellulose nitrate, for a heavy ion with mass M, atomic number Z and velocity BETA c has been expressed by the semi- empirical formula: R( BETA ) = (M/z/sup 2/) B/sub alpha /, ( BETA ) + MZ/sup n/ C/sub z/ (137 BETA /Z), where n = 0.678 -- 0.002 Z; B/sub alpha /( BETA ) is the referential range of an alpha particle at the same velocity as the ion, C/ sub z/(137 BETA /Z) is an empirical function that is a part of the expression of the extension in range caused by neutralization of the ionic charge near the stopping end of the trajectory. Both functions B alpha and Cz were determined experimentally by means of semiconductor detectors. The energy loss rate was obtained by differentiating R( BETA ). We give range and energy loss values for several ions with energies up to 12 MeV/amu. (auth)
