Measurements of the mass, half-life, and BETA decay of the new isotope /sup 29/Mg are reported. Produced by the /sup 18/O(sup 13/C, 2p)/sup 29/Mg rea ction, this activity was periodically transferred to remotely located Ge(Li) and NE 102 detectors. gamma -ray energies (in keV) and relative intensities for the 29/sup Al daughter transitions are 960.3 plus or minus 0.4 (52 plus or minus 18), 1397.7 PP 0.4 (64 /sup +30/sub -20/), 1430 plus or minus 1.5 (34 plus or minus 17), 1753.8 plus or minus 0.4 (22 plus or mi)), and 2223.7 plus or minus 0.4 (100 plus or minus 6). The /sup 29/Al excitation energies (in keV) and relative BETA branching intensities are 1397-7 plus or minus 0-4 (64/sup +35/sub -28/), 1 753-8 plus or minus Upper limits on other possible transitions are given. /sup 29/Mg decays with a half-life of 1.20 plus or minus 0.13 sec, mesaured by the decay of the prominent 2224-keV gamma ray. The decay of /sup 29/Mg is discussed in terms of the Nilsson model. By measuring the spectrum of puises in thc NE 102 detector coincident with 2224-keV gamma rays, the mass excess for /sup 29/Mg has been determined to be -10590 plus or minus 400 keV, disagreeing by 1.7 plus or minus 0.5 Mev from a previous report. The present mass for /sup 29/Mg is combined with all other information concerning masses of T/ sub z/ = 5/2 nuclides in the 2s-ld shell, and the results are compared with predictions based upon measured masses closer to stability using the transverse relationship of Garvey. When the differences between the mesaured and predicted values are plotted against atomic weight, systematic effects are evident. (auth)
