The recoil distance method was used in the reactions of 11.2MeV alpha particles with sulfur-32 and -34 to study lifetimes of the first 7/2 levels in chlorine-35 and -37 respectively. Two typical spectra of the plunger measurement and the fraction of shiftedpeak intensity to the total peak intensity in the recoil distance measurements as a function of the distance are shown. (JFP) /sup 26/Na and /sup 27/Na were produced in the /sup 10/B(/sup 18/O, 2p) /sup 26/Na and/ /sup 11/(/sup 18/O, 2p)/sup 27N/a reactions by bombarding pellets of boron with 42-MeV /sup 18/O ions. /sup 26/Na was also studied using the /sup 18/O(/sup 13/ C, p alpha ) /sup 26/Na reaction at a /sup 13/C beam energy of 35 MeV. After transfer of the target in a rabbit the BETA and gamma rays were measured with NE1O2 and Ge(Li) detectors. /sup 26/Na decays with Ti/2 = 1.087 plus or minus 0.012 sec and emits 1O gamma rays involving 7 excited states of /sup 26/Mg. From the end-point energy of BETA rays in coincidence with 1809-keV gamma rays the mass excess of /sup /sup 26/Na is found t o be - 7004 plus or minus 200 keV in agreement with the more accurate data of reaction Q values. /sup 27/ Na decays with T(1/2) = 280 plus or minus 20 msec in agreement with a previous measurement. gamma rays of 984.77 plus or minus 0.20 and 1698.5 plus or minus 0.5 keV are emitted with relative intensities of 86.0 plus or minus 2.9 and 14.0 plus or minus 2.3, respectively. The spin of /sup 27/Na is established as J/sup pi/ = (3/2)/sup +/ or (5/2)/sup +/ from these data. from the end-point energy of /sup 27/Na BETA rays in coincidence with 985-keV gamma rays, compared with /sup 26/Na BETA rays, the max excess of /sup 27/Na is - 5650 plus or minus 180 keV based on the /sup 26/Na mass. This result is in fair agreement with a recent direct determination of the /sup 27/Na max. (auth)
