In experiments aiming at finding a suitable decontamination substance, complex-forming and chelating compounds, detergents and/or soap were tested for their efficiency in decontaminating domestic animais surface-contaminated by a mixture of fission products. Observed were the economy, the availability, the storage capacity, and the universality of application of the substances. Investigations were carried out on swine, sheep, and cattle (bulls). For /sup 137/Cs, a decrease by more than one order was attained in surface contamination by all the substances used. A marked decontamination effect of the substances was found for /sup 131/I in swine and cattle; generally smaller efficiency was observed in the elimination of /sup 85/Sr. For practical use, a 1% aqueous solution of EDTA with a common household detergent (JAR-extra) was recommended as a universal decontamination means.
