The recoil ranges of several fission products from spontaneous fission of /sup 252/Cf were measured. The observed average ranges in mg Al/cm/sup 2/ are: /sup 99/Mo, 3.85 plus or minus 0.03; /sup 105/Rh, 3.80 plus or minus 0.13. /sup 111/Ag, 3.84 plus or minus 0.02; /sup 113/Ag, 3.63 plus or minus 0.02; /sup 115/Cd, 3.63 plus or minus 0.02; /sup 127/Sb 3.31 PP 0.05; /sup 129/ Sb 3.32 plus or minus 0.02; /sup 131/I, 3.46 plus or minus 0.03; /sup 123/Te, 3.38 plus or minus 0.02; /sup 140/B a, 3.03 plus or minus 0.03. Ranges of the fragments were converted into energies in order to determine the amount of the deficit in the total kinetic energy release symmetric fission. The deficit was found to be 16 MeV. The relation between the amount of kinetic energy deficit and shell structure, and possible fine structure with masses A = 131 and 132 are discussed. (orig.) (GE)
