A čerenkov counter as high energy photon spectrometer
A Cerenkov counter designed as high energy gamma spectrometer is described. Lead glass is used as a medium in which the shower from a gamma is both produced and absorbed. The incident energy is measured by means of the Cerenkov light produced in the medium by the electrons of the shower. The counter has been calibrated with electrons of energies up to 275 Mev and has shown high efficiency, linear response with the energy and energy resolution from plus or minus 28% at 80 Mev to plus or minus 17% at 275 Mev. Possible improvements of this type of instrument are discussed. (auth)
