Insulator-to-Metal Crossover in the Normal State of La{sub 2{minus}{ital x}}Sr{sub {ital x}}CuO{sub 4} Near Optimum Doping

A 61-T pulsed magnetic field suppresses superconductivity in La{sub 2{minus}{ital x}}Sr{sub {ital x}}CuO{sub 4} single crystals and reveals an insulator-to-metal (IM) crossover for both in-plane resistivity {rho}{sub {ital ab}} and {ital c}-axis resistivity {rho}{sub {ital c}} at a Sr concentration near optimum doping ({ital x}{approx_equal}0.16). The IM transition is unusual in that {ital all} underdoped samples ({ital x}{lt}0.16) show low-temperature insulating behavior, even in samples with linear-{ital T} {rho}{sub {ital ab}} above {ital T}{sub {ital c}} and apparently large {ital k}{sub {ital F}}{ital l}.
