Determination of the parameters of a fluctuating plasma from modulation of a microwave signal
The modulation of an electromagnetic wave by fluctuations of the electron density is described. Analytical relations are obtained under the assumption that the fluctuation frequency and the effective collision frequency are small compared with the frequency of the electromagnetic wave. Using the modulation factor it is possible to find the mean statistical value and the mean- square fluctuations of the electron density in a given interval of time. Experimental investigations have been performed on the decaying plasma of a pulsed reflex discharge in a metal chamber at 4, 8, and 13 mm. Measurements with a double electric probe to determine the fluctuations of the electric field in the plasma simultaneously with the microwave measurements are used to investigate the relation between the modulation of the transmitted wave and the electric field in the plasma.
