ABS>The isotope effect in the diffusion of the stable magnesium isotopes /sup 25/Mg and /sup 26/Mg in silver was determined at a temperature of 812.5 deg C. The frequency ratio of the isotope was measured as a function of the penetration depth in the diffusion by Means of mass spectrometric analysis. The diffusion of magnesium in silver in the alpha -mixed crystal region of the system Ag-Mg depends on concentration. The partial diffusion coefficient of magnesium could be determined for four concentration values. The ratio of the diffusion coefficients of magnesium to silver in infinite dilution is D(Ag/Mg)*/ sub 0//D(Ag/Mg)*/sub 0/ 3.91 at 8l2.5 deg C and 4.15 at 821 deg C respectively. A method was developed to evaluate the isotope effect from the diffusion process in the chemical concentration slope. From the relative change of the isotope frequency ratios of magnesium in the diffusion in silver, the isotope effect E = 0.08 was obtained. (GE)
