The genetic radiation effects of low-dose irradiation are discussed with reference to literature including the results of a series of experiments conducted by the author. Two experiments were performed to investigate the effects of /sup 60/Co gamma radiation on the genetic function of Tradescantia ohiengis Ku 7 in 1970 and 1971. In the 1970 experiment, the plants, which were placed at five different spots within the gamma field (37, 42, 51, 72, and 100 m each from the radiation source) and at a distance of 111.5 m from the radiation source and 8 m high, received radiation in the amount of 18.5 to 2.3 R/day (925 to 115 mR/hr) within the gamma field and 280 R/day (14 mR/hr) in the scattered field. In the 1971 experiment, 10.2 to 2.0 R/day (510 to 100 mR/hr) radiation was delivered at four spots within the gamma field 111.5 m distant and 8 m high. Observations on stamen hair were made in two terms; first on the 11th to 13th day after irradiation and, the second, 25th to 27th day in both experiments. The frequency of mutation was studied of 68,000 stamen hair and was induced per 1 R at the rate of 3.9 (or 3.4) x 10/sup -4/ pink mutant/ stamen hair ond 2.8 (or 2.6) x 10/sup -4/ pink mutant/stamen hair for those that received radiation before and during development. Thus the significant increase in the induction of mutation was observed within the area irradiated with substantially low dose, indicating considerably low mutation doubling dose. The question of permissible dose is also discussed. (JA)
