Dose fractionation phenomena were investigated in Tradescantia clone 02 stamen hairs after fractionated doses of X rays. Fractionation intervals were from 0.5 to 12 hr. The unfractionated doses were 70 and 400 rad, which corresponded to positions along the linear-quadratic segment of the dose-response curve and the region beyond saturation, respectively. Recovery patterns were investigated simultaneously for both pink and colorless somatic mutations/aberrations and an attempt was made to compare their recovery patterns with each other and with stamen hair stunting. Recovery from stunting either did not occur or could not be detected with statistical accuracy. However, the recovery patterns for the somatic mutations differed at different intervals between fractions and between the two doses. Pink events exhibited some recovery at both doses. The colorless events partially recovered in the 70-rad experiment, but in the 400-rad experiment the mutation frequency after one of the fractionation intervals suggested that the stamen hairs reacted as if they received a dose higher than 400 rad. Mutants arising from the same cell type and induced by the same agent do not necessarily recover in the same way and the recovery patterns differ at different doses.
