Magnetron ion source with a hollow mesh cathode and an axial extraction have been studied. Ion current up to 1 mA, when operating gas is hydrogen, has been obtained with a 0.5 mm diam. exit aperture and an extraction voltage up to 10 kV. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
