Two isotopes of einsteinium, /sup 243/Es and /sup 244/Es, were studied by means of alpha -particle spectroscopy. The isotopes were produced by bombarding a /sup 233/U target with /sup 15/N ions accelerated by the Berkeley HILAC. The half-lives and the alpha -particle energies of the two nuclides were observed to be: /sup 243/Es 21 plus or minus 2 s, 7.89 plus or minus 0.02 MeV, /sup 244/Es 37 plus or minus 4 s, and 7.57 plus or minus 0.02 MeV. The mass assignments are based on excitation function measurements and in the case of /sup 244/Es on the genetic link to its EC daughter /sup 244/Cf. Estimates for the EC branching of /sup 243/Es and /sup 244/Es are given. (auth)
