New data on the reaction pp yields pn pi /sup +/ between 12 and 24 GeV/ c are compared with the predictions of an absorptive one-pionexchange (APE) model. It is found that the dependence of the absorptive corrections in the APE model on the p pi /sup +/ mass is very similar to that observed for the pi /sup +/ pi / sup -/ mass in the reaction pi /s up -/p yields pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/n. Furthermore, it is shown that the APE model is in good agreement with the experimental data for various multi-dimensional distributions and also with the overall normalization. For comparison the predictions of a reggeized one-pion- exchange (RPE) medel are also shown. Whereas the APE model is able to describe the properties of the DELTA /sup ++/(1236), the RPE model fails to explain the decay distributions of this resonance. Both models yield a good description of the production and decay properties of the n pi /sup +/ low-mass enhancement. (auth)
