Young Drosophila females were treated with caffeine and mated to mature males that had been irradiated with 2000 R of x rays. The frequency of radiation- induced dominant lethals, sex-chromosome loss, and rearrangements in the paternal genome was determined. The results show that treatment of the females with caffeine leads to an increase of the frequency of dominant lethals and sex- chromosome loss, and to a decrease in the frequency of rearrangements. It is suggested that caffeine acts by partially inhibiting repair processes in the oocytes, which are required for the repair or misrepair of chromosome breaks in mature spermatozoa. (auth)
