Using Chinese hamster cells, strain V79-4, the effects of a range of neutron energies on cell survival and cell mutation were examined. The mutation assay used was that of resistance to high levels of the purine analogue 8- azaguanine. /sup 60/Co gamma radiation was used as a reference in these studies. Relative Biological Efficiency (RBE) values for cell survival and cell mutation are presented for l5 MeV neutrons, and for three broad neutron spectra, with energies extending up to 6, 9, and l5 MeV respectively, obtained from deuterons on beryllium. The relevance of these studies to radiological protection norms is discussed. (GE)
