Theory of Accelerators with a General Magnetic Field
- Midwestern Universities Research Association (MURA), Madison, WI (United States); University of Notre Dame, IN (United States)
The particle motion in an accelerator having a general magnetic field is investigated. For a wide class of machines, which includes the A.G. synchrotron, FFAG machines, and the fixed frequency cyclotron, a relatively simple solution of the equations of motion has been found. General expressions for the equilibrium orbit, and for the linear motion and tune are obtained. It is expected that the results should be good within an error of about 15% for presently considered machines.
