Complex formation in the systems uranium halide--alkali metal halide. Enthalpy of formation of Rb$sub 2$UBr$sub 6$ and Cs$sub 2$UBr$sub 6$

Standard enthalpies of formation of Rb/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/ and Cs/sub 2/UBr/ sub 6/ at 25 deg C were determined. The determination was made by measuring the enthalpy of solution of the compounds studied in 0.5% FeCl/sub 3/ solution in 2% HCl. The enthalpy of formation of the hexabromouranate (IV) ion and the energy of the U-Br bond remain constant with a change from Rb/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/ to Cs/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/. The greater entha lpy of formation of Cs/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/ from the starting bromides in comparison with Rb/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/ be explained from an examination of the bonds in the complex anion, but evidently results from the greater strength of the inner-sphere bonds in Cs/sub 2/UBr/sub 6/.
