DETERMINATION OF THE DIMENSIONS OF THE CARBIDE PARTICLES DURING THE PROCESS OF TRANSFORMATION OF CHROMIUM CARBIDES FROM ONE STATE INTO THE OTHER DURING TEMPERING OF HARDENED STEEL
Depending on the carbon and chromium content, carboa steels in the equilibrium state may contain carbide with a rhombic lattice (Fe,Cr)/sub 3/C, with up to 12 to 15% chromium; carbide with a hexagonal lattice (Cr, Fe)/sub 7/C/ sub 3/, with at least 33% Cr; and carbide wlth a cubic lattice made of the changes in the dimensions of the carbide particles during transformation of carbide of one composition into carbide of another composition. The dimensions of the carbide crystals were determined by x-ray methods on carbide powders produced from steel by electrolytic dissolution. A steel contnining 0.7% C, 0.1 to 0.3% Cr, 0.25 to 0.40% Mn, and no more than 0.02% of either S or P was used. The changes in the dimensions of carbide crystals were determined as a function of the tempering temperature. At low tempering temperature the carbide crystals did not grow. For instance, the crystals (Fe,Cr)/sub 3/C did not grow at tempering temperatures up to 450 or 500 deg C, and in the temperature range 500 to 550 deg C the dimensions of the crystallites became even smaller. However, an increase of the tempering temperature above 550 deg C causes a growth of the crystals. A decrease in size of the crystals was observed for the carbide (Cr,Fe)/sub 7/C/sub 3/ at tempering temperatures of 550 to 600 deg C. (J.S.R.)
