Measurement of the total energy of bremsstrahlung beams from electron accelerators; Izmerenie polnoi energii puchkov tormoznogo izlucheniya ot elektronnykh uskoritelei

Book ·
OSTI ID:4336721

Experiments on the accurate measurement of the total energy of bremsstrahlung beams from electron accelerators are generalized. The different methods used for this type of measurement, e.g., calorimetric, scintillation, and ionization, are described. The comparative characteristics of these methods are given and means for their continued improvement are examined. Special attention is given to the quantometer which is the most promising instrument for the absolute measurement of the energy of bremsstrahlung beams. The results of the comparison of its reading with other absolute methods in the energy range from 5 MeV to 5 GeV are reported. Special ionization chambers used as secondary standards are also described. Extensive tables of the attenuation coefflcients of gamma radiation are given for the energy range from 10 keV to 100 GeV. The energy loss and the mean free path of electrons at energies from 10 keV to 1 GeV are also tabulated. (tr-auth)
