Magnetic moments on the RFe/sub 2/ molecule (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Y, or Lu) were determined by measuring the magnetization curves at 4.2 deg K in fields up to 50 kOe. The magnetic moment on the rare earth ion was shown to be less than that on the free trivalent ion. In a study of the temperature dependence of the coefficient of force, a clear dual maximum was observed close to the temperature of magnetic compensation in ErFe/sub 2/. The Curie point was determined by a thermodynamic method. The increase in the Curie points with increase in spin from Lu and Y to Gd is explained by the marked contribution of the overall interaction of the rare earth ion sublattices with the Fe sublattice.
