Application of probabilistic methods in offshore field development
- Norsk Hydro A.S., Stabekk (Norway)
Norsk Hydro is responsible for the worlds first concrete semisubmersible production platform to be used at the Troll Olje field in the North Sea with a waterdepth of 310--340 m. For such a novel concept, present engineering practice and codes may not be directly applicable. Norsk Hydro has applied probabilistic methods for several years, and the examples described are from the last three years. The examples described are: (1) evaluation of required wall thickness and sufficient shear reinforcement of concrete columns to avoid punching shear failure due to ship impact; (2) the effect upon safety factors regarding overload of mooring lines by improved material quality and by increasing the number of mooring lines from 8--12 to 16 or 20; (3) documentation of safety margin for a free span export pipeline with respect to onset of cross-flow vibrations. The safety factor inherent in traditional pipeline design is compared to nonlinear pipeline design. The structural reliability is determined as a function of current velocity and confidence in the estimated eigenfrequencies. The examples illustrate how fairly simple probabilistic models can be established to fulfill short deadlines and provide valuable information for the decision maker.
