Coupling of Betatron and Phase Oscillations in a Synchrotron

The coupled equations for radial position, momentum, and phase oscillations in a synchrotron are treated by use of difference equations., The effect of a radial variation in the accelerating radiofrequency voltage is included in the treatment; any resultant camping of one type of oscillation is shown necessarily to be accompanied by equal anti-damping of oscillations of the other type. A simple treatment of the adiabatic variation of parameters for systems of linear differential or difference equations is given.
