Use of /sup 18/F and a scintillation positron camera permitted the detection of radioactivity in the femoral head of dogs. Absence of IBF correlated with avascularity and the presence of /sup 18/F with vascularity of the femoral head. The findings were documented by histological and tetracycline labeling techniques. Revascularization of the femoral head was detected as early as one month after surgically induced avascularity. Preliminary studies in patients support these observations. The results of this investigation suggest that this radioisotopic technique may prove to be a practical method of assessing femoral head circulation and predicting avascular necrosis of the femoral hesd. Early disgnosis of avascularity of the femoral head following femoral head fracture could significantly reduce the morbidity of this disease. (auth)
