The author presents a procedure for the low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis of a novel three-dimensional square pyramidal-tetrahedral framework vanadium phosphates [HN(CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}){sub 3-}NH]K{sub 1.35}[V{sub 5}O{sub 9}(PO{sub 4}){sub 2}]{sm_bullet}xH{sub 2}O. These materials have extremely low framework densities and among the largest cavities observed in open-framework solid-state materials. The X-ray crystallography of these compounds is discussed. The large cavities are interconnected to one another in a diamond-like topology. Ion exchange and sorption properties of the phosphate hydrates are presented. 21 refs., 10 figs., 6 tabs.
