POSSIBILITY OF HYPERFRAGMENT FORMATION IN K$sup -$-d REACTIONS

If there exist bound SIGMA /sup -/-neutron and/or LAMBDA /sup 0/- proton systems, the irteraction between slow K--mesons and deuterons may be an effective means for their production. Estimates are given for the ratio GAMMA of production of bound states to the corresponding free states for the reactions K/sup -/ + d yields SIGMA /sup -/ + n + pi /sup +/ or LAMBDA /sup 0/ + p + pi /sup -/, whe re the K/sup -/ is supposed to be bound in a low-lying atomic orbit. The following connected alternatives must be considered: (1) K/sup -/ is scalar or pseudoscalar, (2) the capture takes place frora an atomic s- or p- state, (3) the final bound state is?sup 3/S and /sup 1/S. The /sup 3/S and /sup 1/S cases are qualitatively dlfferert. Apart from this it turns out that THETA depends mainly on the binding energy of the hyperon-nucleon system and is insensitive to its effective range. If the ( SIGMA /sup -/,n) system is bound in a /sup 3/S-state with an energy approximately 1 Mev, GAMMA may be articipated to be of order unity. lt is also noted that the reactions in question may yield partially polarized hyperon beams.
