Plutonium assemblies in the Dodewaard BWR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4333986
Since 1967, BELGONUCLEAIRE has pursued for BWR reactors the design of plutonium fuel elements of the island type (i.e., the plutonium rods inserted in the central zone of the bundle and surrounded by enriched uranium fuel rods). Complementarily to plutonium recycle approaches performed within other programs, where either 25% (self-generated Pu) or 100% of the fuel rods of each assembly are cortaining Pu, BELGONUCLEAIRE designed and delivered two high performance Pu fuel assemblies where 40% of the fuel rods of each assembly contain Pu; these were loaded in April 1971 in the DODEWAARD BWR, owned and operated by GKN (Gemeenschappelijk Kernenergiecentrale Nederland).
