Walk-over monitor for alpha and beta--gamma contamination

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4333727
A walk-over hand and shoe monitor was deqeloped to quickly screen personnel for alpha and beta-gamma contamination when leaving a regulated work area. A walk-over bridge monitor was selected because it is easy to use and therefore is readtly accepted by personnel, and it also allows a large number of employees to be monitored quite rapidly which is particularly important at shift changes. Other walk-over or walk-through personal contamination monitors have been reported, but none monitored for alpha, as well as beta-gamma contamination. The monitor allows 60 people per minute to be checked, which is considerably faster than conventional stand-on monitors. Approximately 4 x 10/sup 3/ dis/ min of alpha, 1.6 x 10/sup 4/ dis/min of 201Tl(0.77 MeV beta), or 2.2 x 10/sup 6/dis/ min of 61Mn (0.84 MeV gamma) on hands or shoes of a person walking across the monitor at a normal pace triggers an alarm.
