Automatic conveyor type laundry alpha--beta--gamma contamination monitor

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4326738
An automatic radiation monitoring system was developed by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory for ihe Federal Support Services of International Telephone and Telegraph to scan laundered protective clothing and automatically reject contaminated garments. This system employs two stainless steel wire belt conveyors that transport the wearing apparel at a belt speed of 160 in./min between two large alpha-beta-gamma scintillation detectors that simultaneously monitor upper and lower surfaces of each item of apparel for alpha-beta-gamma contamination. The instrument reliably sorts items for further decontamination if they are contaminated to a level greaier than the equivalent of 25,000 dis/min (11 nCi) of Ra DEF or 1000 dis/min (0.45 nCi) of 5-MeV alpha emitters distributed over 100 cm/sup 2/.
