CLOSED-CYCLE-GAS-TURBINE-REACTOR-POWER-PLANT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4333428

A discussion of different problems involved with the development program of a closed-cycle-gas-turbinereactor-power-plant is given. The types of enriched uranium fuel elements which permit an operation at temperatures of about 700 deg C, and some of the development work done in this field by private industry in the United States are discussed. Investigations on the choice of the gas from the nuclear and thermodynamic viewpoint are presented, and heat transfer and pressure loss problems for different gases and their mixtures are included. Calculations of gas activity due to neutron capture by the gas, impurities, residual matter from erosion or incomplete cleaning, and fission product leakage from the fuel elements are included. The thermal efficiency of different steam and gas cycles are also compared. (auth)
