Indirect fired gas turbines for cogeneration - open or closed cycle
The indirect fired gas turbine cycle separates the products of fuel combustion from the turbine working fluid, and thus permits the use of cheap and dirty fuels instead of the clean and expensive fuels required by direct fired gas turbines. Indirect fired/cogeneration systems are expected to find substantial future application, depending upon the success of current R and D efforts to develop a durable and affordable fired heater. Indirect fired gas turbine/cogeneration cycles may be arranged for open or closed cycle operation, resulting in significant differences in equipment size and cycle performance. This paper addresses those comparisons. The results of studies conducted to evaluate the relative performance of indirect fired open and closed cycle gas turbine/cogeneration systems under a variety of process heat and electrical load requirements are described. The technical aspects of the gas turbine/cogeneration systems are discussed as well as the interrelation between costs and technical aspects. Comparisons are made with steam turbine based cogeneration.
